May 2024 – ‘VETTEVENTURE
Peter Spevak sent this summary of this recent event.
We took a nice drive with some Corvette Club friends to Hildale for a picnic in their city park…Maxwell Park.
As you may know Hildale/Colorado City was where the infamous Warren Jeffs FLDS cult had taken over the area. Hildale, formerly known as Short Creek Community, was founded in 1913 by members of the Council of Friends, a breakaway group from the Salt Lake City–based Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church).
We met with Mayor Donia Jessup and her staff in the City Hall and for two hours she presented her gripping, poignant and emotional story of the trauma she, her family and the community suffered under Warren Jeff’s “rule.”
Much of what was presented to the public by the media were distortions by Netflix and others to promote their product.
The Mayor posed with our group for a picture (above) in the park (she’s standing in the middle of the group…in white with dark brown slacks).
Maxwell Park was essentially a mini-Zion Park, i.e., Zion Park without the fees, the mandatory buses, and the crowds. There are various trails leading into the valleys and mountains.
The picnic area was great, the views spectacular and the southern Utah weather just right for an outing.
All of us had driven by Hildale before, and now we realize things have changed tremendously, productively, and positively. The mayor accented the city’s motto: “Welcome Home.” She said that is for all.
I hope you take the opportunity to stop by the park for a picnic, sightseeing, or hiking. A good time was had by all!
